Moai

Some faces seem to have been waiting for us for a very long time.

The Moai with Pukao Hat is our study of the monumental stone figures created by the Rapa Nui people on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) between approximately 1250 and 1500.

Rather than recreating a complete Moai, this sculpture focuses on the part we encounter most readily: the face, shoulders, and distinctive red scoria pukao resting above the head.

The face is rendered in weathered gray stone, its surface pebbled and uneven like granite slowly shaped by centuries of wind and rain. Fine cracks travel across the surface. The edges feel softened by time. It looks old because it is meant to feel old—not polished and pristine, but like something that has stood outdoors and quietly endured.

Above it sits the pukao, modeled after the porous red volcanic stone used for these distinctive topknots or headdresses. Its surface is pocked with dimples and small cavities, capturing the wonderfully irregular texture of scoria.

And then there are the eyes.

There aren't any.

Instead, the Moai has deep, empty sockets.

They are intentionally left open, waiting to be filled.

That small detail changes the character of the entire sculpture. Rather than staring back at you, the Moai seems to be waiting for someone—or something—to complete the face.

Perhaps that is part of the appeal of the Moai themselves.

They are monumental, but remarkably quiet.

They don't reach toward you. They don't demand your attention. They simply stand, facing the world, carrying an expression that is difficult to read and impossible to forget.

This sculpture is an attempt to spend some time with that form: to study its proportions, its weathered surfaces, its distinctive silhouette, and the striking contrast between gray stone and red volcanic rock.

A face shaped from stone.

A hat shaped from fire.

Eyes waiting in the darkness.

And a presence that feels as though it has been standing there long before we arrived.
